In Germany, during the 1700s, there were 300 little states! One of these states was Brandenburg. Their leader Frederick the 1st, had also inherited land named Prussia. Now the Holy Roman Emperor ruled over all of these states but because Prussia was not in their empire, they said he could be called the King of Prussia, but not the kingdom of Brandenburg. So, he paraded in Prussia and made him king and his wife queen! And when he went to Brandenburg to do the same thing and although he wasn’t the king there, he made it look like a royal ceremony. And even though he wasn’t the king of Brandenburg, he acted like he was, since his subjects in Brandenburg and Prussia called him king and he made his court the most magnificent in Europe at the time! Because he had limited power, he made his people loyal to a Reich, the German word for German kingdom. and after Frederick the 1st his son, Frederick William 1st made Brandenburg and Prussia unite into one state and made the army stronger. And then Frederick the 1st’s grandson, Frederick the 2nd, conquered land and made Prussia larger. And the Prussian kingdom would then become modern day Germany.
