During WWII, children named Edward, William, and Anna were NOT sad because their grandma died. They didn’t really care for her, as she was strict and did not let them experience any fun things to do when you are young. Because the Germans took over France in 1940, they started bombing London, where the children lived, causing their solicitor to suggest they should leave the area. So, they packed their most important items, and prepared to go into the countryside, where it wasn’t a necessary target for Germany so they would be safe there. After a long way there, they arrived at what you call a billet, a temporary place to stay. Also, while they were staying in the countryside, they had to do summer school, which they didn’t really care about. Their first billet that they were in, were kind but their children, Jack and Simon, annoyed the three, finally causing them to get kicked out since Edward got framed by them. They then told their teacher Ms. Carr to get them a new billet. She was angry on Edward because she thought he did the bad thing instead of Jack and Simon actually doing it. So, their 2nd billet, was poorer than the first one, making their conditions worse than before. Ms. Griffith couldn’t really provide enough food for everyone, since she had too many people she could take care of. Now the trio loved to read books, so they went to the library almost every day to get some. They wanted the librarian, Ms. Muller, to adopt them and take her into her billet, but she couldn’t because people thought her husband was a Nazi, since he was German. But after one of Ms. Griffith’s children tore up Edward’s, William’s, and Anna’s books, they decided to leave and try to convince Ms. Carr to let them stay with Ms. Muller. Ms. Carr, mad again that they left their 2nd billet, finally assigned them to go with Ms. Muller, making the children very happy. Because their grandma died, no one was there to take care of them and they also actually had a second reason to go find a new billet: to find someone to take care of them in the long-term. So, when they asked Ms. Muller to adopt them and take care of them, she said yes and was sorry for the children, as they lied about their grandma still alive this entire time.
